SeaO₂ Meets EU Policymakers to Advance Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR)
Last week, our Chief Commercial Officer, Jelmer Altena, and Founder’s Associate, Zamin Syed, joined the Negative Emissions Platform (NEP) and fellow members in Brussels for two days of discussions with EU and international policymakers. The focus: How Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) can strengthen Europe’s industrial resilience, competitiveness, and climate leadership.
From the design of the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation (CRCF) to the inclusion of CDR within the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), it’s clear that Europe is entering a decisive phase for shaping a robust policy and market for CDR.
We shared our perspective on CDR through our Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) technology and the vital role of the ocean in reaching net zero. With the EU Council having just agreed on its 2040 climate target, these conversations come at a pivotal moment for shaping the future of European climate ambition and market development.
Throughout the sessions, we engaged with representatives from the European Commission, Parliament, and Council, alongside leaders from industry, research, and society. These dialogues underscored the importance of coordinated action to ensure that CDR technologies can scale responsibly and contribute meaningfully to Europe’s 2040 climate targets. We also discussed the need for innovation funding mechanisms, transparent MRV frameworks, and cross-sector partnerships that can turn promising technologies into tangible climate solutions.
The NEP Advocacy Days reaffirmed that policy support is essential to accelerate CDR deployment in Europe. Without it, the EU risks losing momentum and innovation to other regions. But with clear and supportive frameworks, Europe can lead in building a competitive, sustainable, and scientifically grounded CDR ecosystem, one that benefits both industry and the planet.
A big thank you to the NEP team and fellow members for organizing such insightful and forward-looking discussions. We look forward to continuing this dialogue and contributing to a climate-positive Europe.
