Carbon Capture & Utilisation in Focus at SustainaLab @ Amsterdam Science Park 💡
Carbon Capture & Utilisation in Focus at SustainaLab @ Amsterdam Science Park💡
Last Thursday, SustainaLab launched its first SustainaLab Talks, bringing together researchers, startups, and industry partners across the carbon value chain to discuss the latest in Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technologies.
SeaO₂’s CTO, Maarten Oudshoorn, contributed our perspective on the role of the oceans in carbon removal. He highlighted how Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) leverages the ocean’s natural ability to absorb CO₂ and how Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) can accelerate and scale this process. Maarten discussed how SeaO₂’s proprietary technology captures CO₂ directly from seawater, producing a pure CO₂ stream that can either be stored permanently or used in industrial applications, thereby bridging the gap between removal and utilisation. He emphasized that this dual pathway not only supports climate targets but also diversifies market opportunities, reducing commercial risks for investors.
The discussions throughout the event touched on several key focus areas:
🔹 Capturing CO₂ directly from air and oceans
🔹 Converting CO₂ into chemicals and materials for circular use
🔹 Utilising CO₂ in sectors such as greenhouses and cement production
🔹 Applying AI to accelerate the discovery of breakthrough materials, including those that make carbon capture more efficient
Storage also featured prominently in the conversation—whether from smokestacks, the atmosphere, or the oceans, with a shared conclusion that all approaches are essential to effectively address climate change. Thanks to the innovative solutions presented, participants saw the challenge not only as urgent, but also as a promising opportunity.
👏 A big thank you to our fellow speakers Sonja Pullen (University of Amsterdam), Rob van Straten (Skytree), Jan Vaes (Brineworks), Max Welling (CuspAI), Francesco Dalla Longa (TNO), and to Annemieke de Raad (IXA - Innovation Exchange Amsterdam) for moderating.
➡️ The University of Amsterdam will follow up with participants to explore joint efforts in securing funding for future collaborations and innovations.
