🌊 From the Liège Colloquium on mCDR to the One Ocean Science Congress
It’s been a busy and inspiring couple of weeks for our Head of MRV & Oceanography, Dr. Daan Reijnders, and the broader marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) community 👨🔬
Last week marked the 56th Liège Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics, hosted by the University of Liège, with this year’s theme dedicated to marine Carbon Dioxide Removal. The event brought together a vibrant mix of researchers presenting their latest findings across diverse disciplines—ranging from ocean modeling and marine biology to law, life cycle assessment (LCA), and socio-oceanography 🌍
The clear takeaway? Interdisciplinary collaboration is essential to responsibly advancing mCDR. Daan had the opportunity to present SeaO₂’s research and development work in Direct Ocean (Carbon) Capture, highlighting our scientific partnerships and technological progress. He also joined a panel discussion where themes of transparency and public engagement took center stage—prompting the humorous yet striking suggestion that perhaps mCDR needs a Taylor Swift-level advocate to bring it into the spotlight 🤝
Following Liège, Daan headed to Nice for the One Ocean Science Congress (OOS2025), held in the lead-up to the UN Ocean Conference. The attention around mCDR continued here, bolstered by the launch of significant new publications including the GESAMP Working Group Blue Paper and the Ocean Panel review. These independent reviews are helping policymakers catch up with the rapid developments in mCDR and underscoring the urgent need for clear, science-informed policy to support carbon removal at scale 🌍
Daan once again shared SeaO₂’s progress—focusing on our measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks and ongoing collaborations.
As the global conversation around ocean-based climate solutions grows, we’re proud to be contributing to the science, dialogue, and responsible scaling of mCDR.
